Are There Symptoms of Depression In Your Community?

Hump day already!?

Did the fireworks over the weekend launch you into the week?

I seem to have found myself at Wednesday, wondering how I got here.  It’s been a GREAT week so far!

How was your 4th of July holiday?

I really wanted to go down the mountain to the canoe races and old car show on the beach myself.  Many of my friends were going, and invited me to come along.

Every year there is a parade in Volcano Village.

Every year for the past 7 years my family has attended the parade.

You could say I was feeling a seven year itch.

I decided to ignore the itch and turn down my friend’s kind invitations, because my daughters, Briana almost 16 and Makayla almost 13, were marching in the parade and singing afterwards at the Community Center with the cast of their Summer Musical.  (They both have birthdays this month!)

The parade is usually very big with lots of attendance, and has been getting bigger and bigger in the past few years.

As I headed up the mountain on the fourth, the sky was clear and the weather was beautiful.  Volcano Village is breath taking in the morning!

 

This year, the parade turn out was pretty small, but we still had some pretty cool old cars, and all the community organizations from the village were represented.

Everyone was having a really great time visiting, eating and laughing at the Community Center after the parade.  There was such a strong sense of community in the air.

I have been too busy this year to watch any rehearsals, so when my daughters sang some of Kiss Me Kate with their friends and cast mates it was the first time I had heard it.  They were great!

Opening night is Friday!  It should be fun!

With no crowd to fight, I shared a bit of every tasty food I could find with my 3 kids.  We thoroughly enjoyed the variety and washed it all down with plenty of watermelon!

I even found some time to chat with old friends I don’t get to see much!

The icing on the cake was watching shy timid Briana get drug onto the dance floor by a jitterbugging wild man!  The entertainment value was priceless!  Brina is a quick study!

Later she said she was glad her girlfriend pushed her out there.  She loves to dance, and “that was a ball!”.

There were quite a few beautiful hours of sunshine before our traditional trip to the fireworks show in Hilo Town.  My little 4 year old, Nickolas, took advantage and played his little heart out.  What a joy to watch a young one completely engaged in play.

It wasn’t surprising that Nick was sound asleep by the time we reached the waterfront.  I dropped my girls off to meet their friends, and continued on down Kamehemeha Avenue.

The crowd was thick so I had to travel quite a distance before I finally found a place that I could park and see the fireworks with my little one sleeping peacefully in the back seat.  I was shocked that the open space was right next to the band stand and a large band was playing patriotic music.

An evening rain had thoroughly drenched Hilo by the time we arrived, but the sky cleared up just as the fireworks began.

I crawled out my window and sat on the roof of my van.  The colorful lights were a captivating show and the band was providing the perfect background music.

I thought of my beautiful daughters, sitting on the beach directly under the entertainment that the whole city was watching.  I pictured their smiling faces and saw them laughing with their friends.

For just a few minutes, I felt so connected to all the souls watching the sky.

Abruptly the music ended. 

“Da ta da da da. Happy 4th of July Everybody!”

The beautiful display in the sky continued but the band packed up their horns and called it a day.

The car next to me turned on some nice local music and we continued to  enjoy the show, until they had to start their car and move because the band was leaving and he was blocking their path.

As I sat in silence staring at the sky, rain began sprinkling down.  I crawled back in my window and watched the fireworks through the steady stream of traffic caused by the exiting band members who never even turned toward the beautiful display in the sky.  It was wasted on them.

The contrast kinda suffocated me.  Just a few moments earlier, I felt every heart beat in every soul sharing the celebration in the sky with me, and now I felt like a lonely soldier in battle.

As the rockets red glare, and the bombs bursting in air continued, I felt my spirits fall.  I glanced over my shoulder at my sleeping angel, and a slow smile came to my face.

I closed my eyes and felt the peace of a sleeping baby.  I felt my connection to every other soul on the planet.  Love filled my heart and overflowed.

 

When everyone around you is throwing in the towel, you can still find love in your heart!

Why Can’t You Sleep?

Do you find yourself awake in the middle of the night unable to sleep?

What do you do when you can’t sleep?

Read?

Drink warm milk?

Watch television?

Claudia takes advantage of the time she can’t sleep, to do things like paint her living room!  During the day she is so tired she often worries that she will fall asleep while doing the shopping or driving her mother to her many doctors appointments.

When Claudia tries to help her daughter, Cassie, with her homework she is so fatigued that the cob webs are too thick to think!  Cassie is on her own.

She was in tears the other day when we had lunch because Cassie’s grades are sliding and her mom’s bed sore is getting worse, since she’s been too exhausted to keep up with the frequent repositioning suggested by the nurse.

“What am I supposed to do?!  Why can’t I sleep?” Claudia sobbed.

Why Can’t You Sleep?

  • If you are sedentary you can expect to have difficulty sleeping.
  • Overuse of technology is a great way to cause sleeplessness.
  • Eating empty calories interferes with sleep in several ways.
  • Your chaotic bedroom will definitely contribute to sleeplessness and poor quality sleep.

Claudia didn’t think any of these issues were her problem.  Nothing she tried seemed to help.

Though she admitted that she, “just didn’t get the breathing aspect and what that had to do with it.”

I challenged Claudia to show up each week for The Life Breath Club’s 60 minute discussion of breath awareness and get serious about her Personal Sacred Breathing Program.

Claudia didn’t think that she was sick, so she didn’t think the information applied to her for a few weeks, but she kept coming.

One week, Claudia heard something on the call about emotional processing.

“That was a light bulb moment,” she admitted later.

“I see that it is hard to allow the emotions I feel watching my mother suffer.”

“I see that I feel guilty for feeling burdened with her care.”

“I see that my depression is effecting my ability to mother my daughter and I want to do something about it.”

Claudia’s light bulb moment helped her to see that natural cures for insomnia weren’t working because she was too depressed to consistently apply any of the action steps to implement them!

Just becoming aware of the emotions she was stuffing helped Claudia to stop holding her breath and breathe through all the challenges that normally caused her to self sabotage.

 

What Can You Do To Get More Sleep?

  • Find a way to be active everyday.
  • Soak in a warm epsom salt bath for 20 minutes before climbing in bed.
  • Make whole organic fruits and vegetables a large percentage of your diet and/OR supplement.
  • Create a clean organized sleep space and seek stillness daily.
  • Find out how your breathing is making you sick and do something about it.

 

Claudia says that joining The Life Breath Club was the first step in recognizing her suppressed emotion.

“I use to wake up at 2am and curse at the clock, now I turn my attention to my Sacred Breath.”

Does the thought of a tall bubbling glass of soda on ice make you thirsty?  I mean doesn’t it make everyone salivate?

Have a Coke and a smile, right?

The craving for that bubbling glass of smiling goodness has become an epidemic.

Do Processed Foods Have Any Place In Your Healthy Diet Plan?

What does the term “processed foods” actually mean?

Do visions of t.v. dinners, cookies and chips (or do you call them crisps?) come to mind?

Do you think of canned meats and roasted nuts?

Is bread a processed food, or part of a healthy diet plan?

The term “processed foods”, for all practical purposes, means food that is less wholesome and possibly harmful.

Fruits and veggies become less and less wholesome from the moment they are picked, but are far more wholesome than anything that comes out of a box or can.

Any type of cutting or grinding allows oxidation of the food stuff, and nutrition is lost.

Flour is completely pulverized grains.

Just because your bread is brown, doesn’t mean it is more wholesome!

Eating 100% whole wheat products is a step in the right direction, but you are still eating a grain that has been through a lot since it left the field, and wheat is a common allergen.

Genetic modification takes bread to a new level of processed!

Wheat AND ALL white flour foods are problematic!

Flour Foods

  • breads/muffins (except those of the sprouted variety)
  • pastries/doughnuts
  • cakes
  • pies
  • cookies
  • pasta (GASP!)

 

The foods that are part of the culture that you grow up in become more than just your favorite foods.  They become a connection to the past, comfort foods.

Making healthy diet plan choices is about seeing food from a different perspective!

Process emotional “stuff” and you will eat less junk food!

Unconscious eating (and shopping) isn’t planning for health by any stretch of the imagination.

Powerful Miracle Prayer

When you are hiding from the world, it will take something earth moving to bring you out into the open.

Constant conversation with God is a lifeline.  Whatever your religion, or lack of it, that lifeline is available to you 24/7!

That humble conversation with God is powerful miracle prayer in itself.

If you have a relationship with God, please nurture it!  You want to stay connected.

If you are thinking, “I’m not religious”,

I challenge you to keep an open mind.

 

We are ONE

All of creation is ONE energy.

It really is true.

 

You Can Feel the Feelings of Another.

It is obvious when someone you love is down.

Next time you are out in public, take a look around you.

Can you tell if someone around you is feeling down? … angry? … happy?

If you love a pet, then you have experienced a strong unspoken connection that is beyond understanding.

In fact, it is the connection to others that evokes emotion within you.

 

 

Bring Out All Your Personality Flaws; Fall In Love!

A committed relationship is certain to bring out all your insecurities and test you in new and challenging ways!

What a gift!

Unfortunately, every relationship also contains the potential for powerlessness and pain!

You dump your stuff on those closest to you.  Relationships are such hard work because all those personality flaws can be hard to navigate.

Hey, it all hangs out.  When you share house and home, there is no hiding anything.  (Even from children… they know.)

The real test of character is to stay nice in the face of screaming toddlers, crazed teen agers, mid-life crisis, earth shattering transition, loss of treasures, and betrayal.

We are talking major spiritual work here.

 

The World Is Your Mirror

Your friends are your mirrors.

When you make a new friend, you get the chance to see what kind of energy you are sending out to the universe.

Like energy attracts. You can’t attract un-like energy.

Don’t be too quick to judge new friends.  The lesson is for you.

Judgments that arise in your mind are really just messages about something you can’t see in yourself.

If you run into hostile people or helpful humorous people you will get a sense of what kind of energy lives within you.

Joy has a very high vibration, depression has a very low vibration.

You can re-tune your vibrational frequency by CHOOSING to keep your focus looking up.

However, if you have a suppressed emotion, you will bump into its mirror image somewhere in the world and it will give you the opportunity to release it and be free at last.

Re-focus on your Joyful vibration with a happy memory immediately.

Choose to keep your eyes on the prize.  Those suppressed feelings won’t hurt you if you let them out and be done with it at long last!

Don’t feed bad energy!  BREATHE it away!
