Are you feeling isolated and alone?

Would you like to feel connected to the world outside your door?

It doesn’t matter if you are young or old, building a support system can be challenging.

If you have reached the point of feeling isolated, you need to take quick action to plug yourself in and get the support you need.

Community Resources may be the answer.

Online communities like this one, can offer great resources and contacts that will enrich your life.

The inter-net has the amazing ability to connect you with people all over the world.  There is, however, no substitute for real, flesh and blood, people in your life.

Surround yourself with people who are living an active lifestyle!

Find someone who is full of life, and you have found a role model.

Find someone wanting to make the changes you want to make and you’ve found an accountability partner!

People who are actively participating in community organizations are positive people taking positive action.

Will community resources make your life happier?

The potential is there.  It is up to you.

You definitely can’t make your life better in isolation.

Get out of your comfort zone:

  • Ask about programs at your neighborhood community center.
  • Many churches offer support to the community, even if you are not a member of the church.
  • Volunteer your time in a way that gets you doing what you love.
  • Reach out to like minded individuals and build healthy relationships.

Is the Joy of Christmas Casting a Shadow of Depression On Your Holiday Season?

Christmas 2008-s

Are you finding yourself feeling depressed this holiday season?

In every culture, there are special days that bring back memories of home and loved ones.

Those special days can feel bitter sweet when you are dealing with loss.  The pain becomes intensified.

You don’t want to deal with happy people because you just can’t feel happy.  There is just no faking it.

Do you just wish the holidays were over?

Somehow, when the world is celebrating, loneliness is magnified.

John was a patient of mine for many years.  He absolutely loved the holidays.

His devoted wife was a beautiful energetic lady who was always busy doing something creative.  She had an unbelievable garden, lots of cats and dogs, she loved to bake and used to have a delicious care package to give me whenever I visited.

Every Christmas, she turned their home into a winter wonderland.  It was quite a treat, since the hot humid Hawaiian afternoon just didn’t feel like Christmas to this Montana girl!

I have fond memories of sitting at their kitchen table drinking hot cocoa with candy canes.  (With the air conditioning, it almost felt like winter!)

I remember Ida telling me about her challenges making her traditional Christmas dishes without salt.  John really looked forward to the family celebration, but usually ended up in the hospital before the new year.  To much salt, wine, and fun always did him in.

John would say, “Ida, I’m only gonna live once, it wouldn’t be Christmas without your famous Christmas dinner!”

Every year with the house looking like a post card, the two of them would greet their kids, grand-kids, and extended family for the wildest celebration you have ever seen.  My favorite part was singing Christmas carols by the bonfire.

Their family was full of so much love, you could feel it in the air.

Five years ago, John passed away a few days after Thanksgiving.

Ida faced her life without him.  She couldn’t celebrate the holiday.  Her family tried everything to get her to join them at their homes, or even a Christmas vacation for the whole family. Continue reading Is the Joy of Christmas Casting a Shadow of Depression On Your Holiday Season?

Are You Mending a Broken Heart?

Senior and Young Women Holding Hands

How can you mend a broken heart?

First you need to become aware of your broken heart! You KNOW it when a love is lost in some way, but do you recognize your aching heart in the basic activity of your everyday?

It shows up all the time. What ever you want to be doing … you know you should be doing … but you are NOT doing, has something to do with this aching heart.

When you navigate life from your heart space this aching heart becomes very obvious.

You aren’t doing what you want to be doing because you are resisting it.

If you weren’t resisting it, you would jump in and DO whatever it is that you want to be doing!

Does it seem over stated to call “resistance to change” a “broken heart”?

If you don’t allow your feelings for any reason, you interfere with the guidance they would otherwise offer you.

Change is difficult if you are not tuning into your higher guidance.  You are not accessing your intuition if you are not allowing your emotions.

Allowing your emotion can be a difficult thing to do.

Denying your emotions might seem like a good idea in the moment.  Saying “I’m fine” may seem like it makes you feel better, but if that isn’t how you truly feel then you are stuffing your emotions, denying them even to yourself.

Susan felt that exercise was such an interruption in her routine.

She didn’t really acknowledge that it made her feel awkward and sweaty.

Until she really addressed what it was about “exercise” that she resisted, she couldn’t come up with creative ideas that might be more inspiring because they seem more pleasant to Susan.

  • Swimming might be an option for Susan.  Skill isn’t required to make “healthy activity” out of paddling in the water.
  • An early morning walk in the cool air before her neighbors begin their morning commute might feel more pleasant to Susan.
  • A rebounder tucked in Susan’s closet in front of the teli with a good movie might be more appealing!

Hey, it’s all “exercise” and it all counts!

Asking herself good questions really helped Susan deal with her habitual negative thoughts about exercise.

“How can a brisk walk make my day better?”

Helen feels like she is tied to her oxygen machine, like a leash, preventing her from living her life.

Every time she gets up to walk across the room, she trips on the darn thing!

It feels like a crutch not a healing tool!

In fact, using oxygen felt like giving up to Helen.

The “Life Breath Club” taught Helen how useful supplemental oxygen could be when used diligently!

She also learned many things she was doing that were hurting her and stopping any progress.

Helen just wanted to feel better and gain a little strength so she could enjoy her family and her garden!

Helen began feeling better quickly once she made her decisions based on what she was learning from the “Life Breath Club”.

It was a sad day for Helen the day she realized she needed to use oxygen much more than she was currently using it, but she got over it quickly and took action to meet her oxygen needs.

She quickly lost weight without trying!

Sleep came easier and she had less night time waking!

Helen felt stronger within a week and enjoying her garden became easy.  It didn’t tire her out to get out there and enjoy it so that is exactly what she did!

Helen didn’t know she was resisting the therapy that could really heal her weak heart muscle.

What is your “broken heart story”? Love yourself enough to allow it to mend.

Give to yourself what you need! Take time to learn how!

Once you begin to heal you will experience many old feelings resurfacing.

It is important that you regain your strength so that you can process even your most difficult emotions without creating imbalance and stress.

How do you mend a broken heart and regain strength to heal and realize all your goals?

In the “Life Breath Club” we use an action plan we call BLESS:

If Religion Isn’t About Tolerance, What the Hell Is It About?

If religion isn't about tolerance what the hell is it about?

If you are intolerant then you live with constant stress.

It is much more peaceful to accept life as it is.

You do what you can and you let go, and “allow” what you can’t change.

You are the only person you are in control of, and certainly the only one YOU can change.

When you find in your life that you are spending time focusing on what is wrong with someone else, it is useful to turn your witness on yourself.

What you hate most in others is often what you most dislike about yourself.

Tolerance means loving others as you love yourself.

Any sermon preaching any thing else is a product of human error.

Whatever you call God, and even if you refuse to call God, we are all brothers and sisters.

Without tolerance there is no peace.

Without peace you will be sick.

Peace is right up there with laughter for the best medicine.

Too bad you can’t sell it.

For a happier healthier life:

  • free your heart from hatred
  • free your mind from worries
  • live simply
  • give more
  • expect happiness

Is Halloween For Kids?

Halloween 2008

Horror and gore are dark negative energy … aren’t they?

Certainly the horror part of Halloween is not for the very young, though the thrill of being frightened is attractive to many.

It’s kind of hard to say that it is positive, for sure.  In my house I have always encouraged masquerade, and fun.

Blood and guts are arguably negative things to focus on.

On the other hand pretend is a childhood fun that should be revisited on a regular basis!  Putting on a costume really helps you to step into a new character.

If you can pretend in everyday life, you can focus on what you desire as though it is already yours.  This is the secret to manifesting your desires.

You only have NOW.  Picture your goals as though you already achieved them!  See them in your life today.

Want to feel strong, happy, and content?

Pretend!

If you don’t feel happy and content it may feel like a stretch to “pretend” you DO feel strong, happy and content.

What does strong, happy, and content feel like?

If you can recall a Joyful memory than you have a point of reference.

Remembering a fond memory while you focus on your heart is powerful therapy.

The make believe part is where you pretend that this memory is your current state!

Pretend you are Joyful right now!  It’s GOOD for you!

If you are just too mature to be so childish then try harder!

Become a kid!

If you are at a loss as to how to do that, start by watching funny movies, or reading a joke book.

Better yet, talk to a 2 year old!  If you are a good listener, they will teach you how to become child-like!

Laughter will wake up the kid in you.

Laughing with a child will introduce you to the kid in YOU!

Have a childish Halloween!

Don’t have a kid of your own?  Check out your local Big Brothers and Sisters Program and they will hook you up with a kid in your neighborhood.

Giving back to your community by nurturing its children will give you a sense of Purpose like nothing else can!

Kids are our future!

Caregiver, When Is Death a Valid Choice?

Caregiver, when is death a valid choice?UPDATE 12/28/2012

Do you ever ask yourself when is it okay to choose death?

That may sound like a ridiculous question.

However, when you are dealing with chronic illness in the elderly population the answer is, whenever the patient chooses it.

As a caregiver that can be difficult to accept.

Difficult it may be, but beyond your care and nurturing, your patient’s health and wellness is beyond your control.

You can offer care and advice, but it is up to your patient to choose life … or not.

Many patients feel that their disease has eliminated the opportunity to choose hope and they are tired of suffering.

Sometimes the pain is so obvious that the family prays for an end to the suffering right along with them.

Though, it can be difficult sometimes to see how much pain someone else is in.  You can’t walk a mile in their shoes.

If suffering isn’t obvious, it may be very difficult for you to accept that a loved one has given up!

You likely won’t give up on them even if they give up on themselves!

The good news is that there are LOTS of simple ways to ease pain and discomfort.

You can do a lot for your loved one!  When their pain level subsides a bit, they may find a little leftover hope to help themselves!

The answer is not drugs!

The most respectful thing you can offer a loved one is the right to die with dignity.

Unfortunately, that could take months to years, and the only thing you can do, is offer your care.  Privacy is something to take very seriously. If you can honor their space and keep them comfortable, you are doing all you can.

Educate yourself so that you will know what they need, but leave the decisions up to them as much as possible. If that means drugging their pain, that is their choice.  What you can offer is the idea that there are solutions available.

Let them know “death is a valid choice”!

It might be enough to shake them up and make them realize that they are making a choice.

AND that they can choose differently.

Supplemental oxygen will help alleviate pain.

Though, if you have to force it on the patient it likely won’t benefit them as much as the fight will hurt them!

Encourage your loved one to use oxygen to keep them more comfortable, but if they refuse, be gentle with them AND yourself, and allow them that choice.

They will need to help themselves because you just can’t do that for them.

Using oxygen through the night will make a HUGE difference!

This is a great way to convince them that supplemental oxygen is worth the effort and irritation.

If you meet a lot of resistance to your encouragement to use utilize supplemental oxygen at bed time, try starting oxygen when they get up in the middle of the night to urinate.

At 3am their oxygen level is probably at it’s lowest point, due to fluid creeping into their lungs while they are horizontal.

If you can get them to comply with night time use, they should benefit noticeably from the effort very quickly.  Journal their feelings for them because you may need to convince them that it is helping even when it is obvious!

Sometimes feeling better can motivate further change.  Your loved one may choose to do more to help themselves when they notice it is making a difference!

Encourage supplemental oxygen with activity next, though realize that public use of oxygen is usually resisted due to pride and convenience.

Just enhancing sleep and activity with supplemental oxygen is a great place to start!  If you can get them to do that much, bring them to the “Life Breath Club” and let the “Life Breath Coach” talk them into taking another simple action to help themselves.  They will turn the corner one step at a time!
