If you suffer from chronic pain please know that I have the deepest sympathy for what you live through every day!
Pain robs you of so much of the Joy in life.
You don’t pursue happiness or anything else if your chronic pain is significant!
It’s heart breaking to watch your elders age when they are in a great deal of pain. Many times the elderly are neglected simply because their family just can’t handle watching their loved one suffer.
I’m not making excuses, but I’m not trying to judge either.
Pain is difficult to live with all the way around!
The Life Breath Coach here on Heart Failure Solutions will tell you that taking pain medication to cope with pain contributes to heart disease.
But even heart disease later is better than pain NOW … isn’t it?
With heart disease you think you will just grab your chest and fall to the ground. But the world is experiencing an epidemic of heart failure and succumbing to that fate means years of suffering.
You think you are in pain now, just think what it will feel like to have your legs so swollen with fluid that they feel like they will burst!
A backed up pump will cause all kinds of pain. This is heart failure.
The reason Carrie Tucker invited me to guest post here on her blog is because she knows how hard it can be to overcome a sedentary lifestyle and create active change! Even if you aren’t in pain it’s tough to get moving, but if you don’t get moving you are in BIG trouble!
Scientists tell us that we will die early of EVERY disease if we are inactive.
Sedentary Death Syndrome is FATAL!
I’m The Zen Dance Master so you are probably already suspecting that I’m going to suggest you take a look at dance to get you moving. I definitely am going to do that, but first I want to share a story of how dance gave relief that even pain pills didn’t provide.
Back when I was just learning to dance, I was invited to a retirement home to help my dance teacher entertain and socialize with the residents for Valentine’s Day.
I was just a beginner myself, but I could certainly help with the charitable effort.
I went around the room and asked each of the women if they would like to dance.
One said, “I wished I learned to dance but it’s too late. I can barely walk now.”
Others expressed the same sentiment, citing health conditions.
Then suddenly a woman jumped up out of her seat, waving her hands frantically!
“I want to dance! I’m Mary!” she said, and before I could introduce myself she grabbed my hand and started kicking up her heels.
It was all I could do to hang on! But I knew I’d better or she was sure to fall. She danced like she was possessed!
Mary was in a pure state of joy, smiling from ear to ear!
When she finally sat down to rest, she continued to bounce in her chair to the music.
At the end of our visit the nurse came up to me and said, “I don’t know what you did to Mary but she has never walked down the hall to her room unassisted – she is so wracked with arthritic pain she always needs help to get to her room.”
But his time Mary was literally skipping down the hall by herself, whistling and smiling!
In that moment I felt the Power of Dance.
Mary had to overcome incredible pain just to get out of her chair, let alone dance the way she did!
Just the memory of dance triggered endorphines in her body that helped her overcome pain far better than any pain pills!
Because she had danced long ago, she could immediately tap into those experiences like a time machine, making her feel vibrant and youthful once again!
If Mary had never learned to dance, she may well have never had another pain free evening!
That night I met the regret of never having learned to dance.
It sat in somber silence watching Mary tear up the dance floor!
How could dance change your life?
Learning to dance was difficult for me.
I just felt like, “I can’t dance – I’m not a dancer.”
I was much younger than the elderly folks, but I too felt like “I’m too old to start learning how now.”
What I was really dealing with was fear.
In my mind it was a real fear anyway.
It was hard to risk looking like a fool!
But what would be the price of not trying?
I chose to face my fears, and what I got back was ten fold.
Joy, friends, confidence, laughter, appreciation, and health.
I danced almost everyday.
Have you ever been possessed by passionate inspiration?
I took the power of dance to the community!
Once I saw the powerful healing of dance, I never looked back.
Awesome music and Swing Dance in the Park became center stage in my life.
In San Francisco I became known as The Ambassador of Swing In the Bay Area.
But before I got comfortable in my dance shoes, I remember looking in the window of a professional ballroom thinking, “Wow, those are dance professionals – I could never be that good.”
Little did I know that a few years later I would be teaching professional dance classes at that same ballroom.
All it took was a Shift in my perception.
At forty-five I wasn’t too old. I could dance. I could be a dancer.
Today, I can’t imagine my life without the blessing that is the Power of dance!
Mary and I are blessed with a rich Swing Dance History that keeps the music calling us back to the dance floor.
