What Is Facebook?

Barack Obama and Michelle Obama

Are You On a First Name Basis With President Obama?

Can you imagine referring to former President Bush as George?  The thought makes me chuckle.

Yet all over the internet, and elsewhere, I hear folks referring to President Obama as Barack, and the First Lady, as Michelle.

What is Facebook?  Do you know?  Michelle and Barack do!

The day following his historic inauguration, I logged into Twitter

(Never heard of Twitter!? It’s a fun new social tool you’ve just gotta check out!)

Anyway…..  One of the first “tweets” I read was from a young woman saying, Continue reading What Is Facebook?

Want To Stop Feeling Depressed?

It is a gray and rainy day on the Big Island of Hawaii.

I started the day with a conversation with a depressed (and depressing) friend.

It really set the mood for the morning.  My friends dark energy just seemed to cling to me.

When I took my daughter to the bus, the cold wind and pounding rain seemed to match my mood.

Last week when we were traveling down our road on the way to the school bus stop, my daughter was awe struck by the beautiful view, and grabbed the camera to take a picture through the wind shield, which was over due for a cleaning.

I was so surprised when I got home and took a look at the picture.

Through that dirty window, she had captured the awesome beauty of the morning.

I chuckled, and thought, “wow, awesome beauty shines so brightly, ya don’t notice how murky your field of vision is.”

It reminded me of life.  No matter how stuck in the mud you are, just keep your eye on awesome, and you will be transformed.

Today, just the memory of that beautiful morning shines a light on my dark mood.

I am blessed.

You don’t have to be depressed.

Reach out to friends and family with the intention of uplifting spirits and you’ll find that is exactly what you’ll do!

Christmas Is For Kids

The holidays are upon us.

I was raised catholic so Christmas time is full of Mid-night Mass memories.

In my adult life, I have observed and accepted many different religions.  Where there is love, I am at home.

Christmas to me means giving of yourself with a brand new spirit of good will, that will carry you through ‘til the spring time, when amazing things are possible.

Since I was born and raised in Montana, for me the winter thaw, followed by spring and new life is a powerful time.

Whenever you get caught up in your ego, spend some time with young children and animals.  They can really teach you something about being yourself.

A Child knows exactly who they are even when the adults in their life are wondering.

By the time they hit adolescence, you’ve got your hands full….but those early years are precious innocence.

Christmas Is for Kids is one of my favorite holiday songs.  My mom used to play it every year when I was growing up.

The song talks about adults returning to childhood with the spirit of Christmas.

Ya gotta love it.

If you can embrace the season with a child like innocence you will bring joy into the hearts of everyone you meet.

Magic and wonder are not given the credit they deserve, and happiness really is contagious!

Is the Joy of Christmas Casting a Shadow of Depression On Your Holiday Season?

Christmas 2008-s

Are you finding yourself feeling depressed this holiday season?

In every culture, there are special days that bring back memories of home and loved ones.

Those special days can feel bitter sweet when you are dealing with loss.  The pain becomes intensified.

You don’t want to deal with happy people because you just can’t feel happy.  There is just no faking it.

Do you just wish the holidays were over?

Somehow, when the world is celebrating, loneliness is magnified.

John was a patient of mine for many years.  He absolutely loved the holidays.

His devoted wife was a beautiful energetic lady who was always busy doing something creative.  She had an unbelievable garden, lots of cats and dogs, she loved to bake and used to have a delicious care package to give me whenever I visited.

Every Christmas, she turned their home into a winter wonderland.  It was quite a treat, since the hot humid Hawaiian afternoon just didn’t feel like Christmas to this Montana girl!

I have fond memories of sitting at their kitchen table drinking hot cocoa with candy canes.  (With the air conditioning, it almost felt like winter!)

I remember Ida telling me about her challenges making her traditional Christmas dishes without salt.  John really looked forward to the family celebration, but usually ended up in the hospital before the new year.  To much salt, wine, and fun always did him in.

John would say, “Ida, I’m only gonna live once, it wouldn’t be Christmas without your famous Christmas dinner!”

Every year with the house looking like a post card, the two of them would greet their kids, grand-kids, and extended family for the wildest celebration you have ever seen.  My favorite part was singing Christmas carols by the bonfire.

Their family was full of so much love, you could feel it in the air.

Five years ago, John passed away a few days after Thanksgiving.

Ida faced her life without him.  She couldn’t celebrate the holiday.  Her family tried everything to get her to join them at their homes, or even a Christmas vacation for the whole family. Continue reading Is the Joy of Christmas Casting a Shadow of Depression On Your Holiday Season?

Why Is Sleep So Important?

For the Sunlight article on Wikipedia. Origina...

Why are American’s so proud of sleep deprivation?

Do you take pride in working yourself to death?

Sleep is SO important, because the fuel we burn is electricity, and you only make it while you sleep.

Out of gas?  Need coffee and other stimulants just to get through the day?

Change your attitude about sleep, and fill your gas tank.

It is this low fuel level that begins the process of all disease.  No matter what your diagnosis, your sickness began by neglecting to provide your body with the fuel it needs to do it’s job each day.

ALL Diseases follow a process that has 7 stages ending in cancer.

Often the disease process will kill you before it reaches this final stage, but never the less, all disease follows the same progression.

The best way to prevent ALL disease is to get PLENTY of sleep, and stop dis-ease, before it advances and becomes uncomfortable and dangerous.

The 7 Stages of Disease:

  1. nervous exhaustion (not enough fuel)
  2. toxicity (resulting from lack of energy)
  3. irritation (from building toxicity)
  4. inflammation (suffering begins as your body struggles to heal!)
  5. ulceration (toxicity eats away at tissues)
  6. induration (your body encapsulates the toxicity to protect itself)
  7. cancer (the cells of your harmonious organism turn against you)

Unfortunately, stages 1 through 3 are not even recognized as disease, nor given a second thought by the average person or doctor.

Most health care providers do not recognize disease

Until it has advanced to “inflammation” (Stage 4) and is causing discomfort.

At this point, interfering with your bodies attempt to do some house cleaning (detoxifying) will only further advance your disease.

Build your health BEFORE you lose it if you have the choice.

However, it is NEVER too late to Heal.

Do you want to feel better?

Is Passion a Solution For Depression?

Light at the end of the tunnel

Do you live with depression?

Looking for a light at the end of the tunnel?

Losing someone special or major life transitions can cause you to experience depression.

Do you ever feel depressed but you don’t know why?

I’ve heard many of my clients say “I’m just depressed.”

Is “Clinical Depression” when you stop looking for the reason why you feel down, or when you stop hoping to feel better?

Is it the feeling that you are falling in a bottomless hole?

No matter what the cause, there are simple solutions for depression.

FIRST, it helps to recognize depression.

Physical AND emotional pain are sometimes the first indicators of depression.

I left depression behind years ago!  I did it by recognizing it early and taking action to counter act what I knew what coming!

I tried drugging my depression just to relieve the pain!

Side effects were the reason I decided to leave psychotropics alone for medicating pain.

My doctors explanation for why psychiatric drugs worked to medicate my pain made no sense to me, so he couldn’t talk me into putting up with the side effects!

I’m very glad!

I found solutions to my pain but they didn’t come in a pill bottle!

Do you feel comfortable drugging your pain OR your depression?

It’s certainly a personal decision to drug your symptoms, but you should know what you are risking.

The drug inserts you get, are not nearly so alarming as the drug information that is available to your physician.

The side effects of anti depressant drugs are worrisome to say the least.

For the aging patient with compromised health, they could be deadly.

Pain medication increase your risk of heart failure and interfere with your healing process.

They have their place, but they are potentially very harmful!

It is best to give your attention to natural therapies, and consistent basic self care before risking these drugs.

Three side effects you should be very aware of while drugging depression or pain with psychotropic medication:

  • INCREASE in moody-dark behavior.
  • Dizzy spells shortly after medicating.(Devastating falls can be life altering.)
  • Patients complained of thick, hard to expel mucous only days after starting these drugs.

Sometimes the trouble these drugs are causing are chalked up as part of some other disease process.

Let me tell you about a chronic lunger I used to care for.

I took care of a patient for many years who was drowning in depression.

Her business partner had left her with a debt what was eating up her entire retirement income.

“It is my responsibility”, she said.

Ka iwi was living on noodles, hotdogs, and coffee.  She couldn’t breathe, and she couldn’t afford her electric bill if she used her home oxygen machine.

She was extremely hard to deal with, and was so combative that she probably only heard half of what I said my first visit to her home.

I bluntly told her that she wouldn’t last long living like that, and she better do something to change it.

She confided in me and told me the whole story.  I encouraged her to swallow her pride and humble herself to bankruptcy if that is what it took.

“After all, you won’t live long enough to pay that debt at this rate, anyway”, I said.

“What do you want to do with the time you have left?”

“Do you have any other passions that might be worth living for?”

“Do you WANT to live?”

(If you think Ka iwi is better off dead than walking away from debt that was killing her, then we will have to agree to disagree!)

Ka iwi never told me how she resolved her financial issues, but I watched her regain her spark almost overnight

She bought several ukuleles and now teaches the ancient Hawaiian culture to kids in her community.

She is passionate about life again.

The kids are blessed to have her in their lives, passing along what her elders taught to her.

The drugs made it MUCH harder to breathe and she didn’t need to drug her depression if she shared her passion for ukulele!

Your passion could be the light at the end of your tunnel of depression.
