I woke from a very upsetting dream early this morning. It disturbed me deeply. I tried to shake it off and focus on what was important, but the memory of it hung in the air.
I keep a collection of “quotes to live by”, and read a few trying to shine a light on my dark mood.
“The universe is change; our life is what our thoughts make it.” -Marcus Aurelius
“There is no value in life except what you choose to place upon it and no happiness in any place except what you bring to it yourself.” -Henry David Thoreau
“I don’t want to live. I want to love first, and live incidentally.” -Zelda Fitzgerald
The quotes felt empty and distant compared to the darkness that enveloped me.
I tried to focus on the chores needing to be done and went into my daughter Briana’s room to collect her dirty laundry. She is a quote collector too, and has many taped to her walls.
I read the one directly above her hamper …
“Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more.” –William Shakespeare
It reminded me of a “Briana quote” that I have heard her say many times.
“Life would be so much more fun if it were a musical”
Her wonderful quote made me want to feel better, but I still felt a bit like I was strutting and fretting.
When my daughters woke, they proposed a last minute plan and talked me into it, and the morning routine became rushed and stressful.
Since it IS Sunday, I was really hoping for a lazy day around the house and I felt my resentment rise as the morning wore on.
I decided to go ahead and drop them at their activity and take my little guy to the beach for some quality time.
Still feeling tense and stressed I headed towards the children’s beach that I normally take my 5 year old to. He piped up from the back seat, saying that he didn’t want to drive so far, and couldn’t we just go to the boat beach?
I really wanted to make it quick and get back to the house, so I decided to go ahead and stop for a walk along the section of beach that is past the break wall.
We haven’t been there in a very long time, and I had forgotten how peaceful it is to feel the ion effect of the waves crashing on the shore.
It wasn’t long before I felt my shoulders relax and a deep sigh wash me clean. Right about then I looked up and noticed the breath taking view of the Hilo hillside and the sail boats on the ocean.
It was almost as if it weren’t there before I became present in the moment.
I felt like a child taking in the wonder of the world.
The feel of the wind in my face.
The sound of the waves hitting the shore,
causing Nickolas to squeal as the water surged around him.
The sound of the beach rocks gently rolling with the waves on their return trip to the sea.
The feel of the warm sun on my skin.
The surprisingly delightful feeling of the wet tips of my jagged-edged skirt licking my legs.
The feeling of my feet sinking deep with each step, as I ran across the hot sand.
The look of Joy on my precious one’s face as he ran along the shore, shouting with pride as he collected volcanic beach stones and smooth glass and sea shells … treasures washed in by the tide.
We lost track of time completely, and felt tired and satisfied when we climbed back into the van for the trip home.
As we left the sunny beach and climbed the mountain into the clouds and rain, I felt a deep peace wash over me.
From the back seat my son broke the blissful silence.
“Mommy, what your dream is?” he said. (I love how Nick talks)
After a couple seconds of thought, I answered him.
“My dream is to do what I love while I help others to create more happiness and Joy in their lives.”
I don’t know what made Nickolas ask me that particular question right then, but it struck me that becoming child-like and basking in awesome-simple beauty brings you to a wonderful place to re-evaluate your focus in life.
There was a moment of silence and Nick said,
“Dat a really good dream, Mom.”
From the mouths of babes, quotes to live by.
Become child-like and get your focus right. You’ll be glad you did.
